Courtyard Creation

A split level from the mid century didn’t have enough space to host large groups of guests and local extended family. The kitchen needed expansion and updating and the owners wanted more of a connection to the back yard.

We developed a courtyard from a flat rear elevation by pushing out the kitchen, adding lots of windows, and lifting a dining room addition onto exposed piers. We sought to create a view from the back yard of the house that had some interest and depth. The shifting heights in the rear works with the split level style and the new L shape creates a courtyard around the existing deck.
