The owner of this 1960s split level, a painter, wanted a modern looking addition to reflect her personality and artwork. This home in the forest also needed reprogramming to expand into underutilized space and meet the needs of a growing family. With a few design changes we modernized the front entry, protecting steps from weather, added two baths, and inserted a new, lower entrance door and mudroom to serve the family.

The new master bedroom suite is a volume over the garage which steps back from the front facade, respecting the existing elevation hierarchy and adding modern flair in the form of a sawtooth roof. Inside, the addition is to scale with the rest of the house and includes a bedroom, bath and office.
