Pondside Mid Century
The beauty of this 1951 house, set atop a hill overlooking a pond, was obscured by a 1980s renovation. The young couple knew there was potential for greatness and wanted a custom forever home which gave us license to recommend bold changes. We lifted the ceiling in the living room from 7’-9” to 11’-6” and added another window for an undistracted, uninterrupted view of the pond, and opened the doorway to the new kitchen with continuing site lines through backsplash windows. We closed the door from the driveway to the kitchen, forcing all traffic to enter into a new skylit foyer, widening the opening to the living room and replacing the wall with a screen which hints at the view beyond. Keeping the mid century railing, we made it safer by adding cables and copied the screen around the stairs on the lower level. The lower level was completely reconfigured, removing the second stairs to connect the two sides, adding a gym with a sauna and a new full bath and renovating the guest bedroom with slider doors overlooking the pond and second new full bath. The new powder room and laundry room upstairs were enlarged by removing a shower and the new primary suite renovation included a closet out of a small bedroom and a bath enhanced with dark green glossy tiles and a skylight which meets the shower door glass on a tight turn. The entire heating and electrical systems and building envelope were upgraded with insulation and sound proofing, a new roof and skylights. As the project wrapped, a passerby called to buy the house for whatever price and the young couple said no, they would never leave their new/old home.
